Downloading Pegasus Mail

Pegasus e-Mail Client

version 2,55 - 32 bit for Windows 95

You should have a temporary directory on your machine that you use for installing files. We recommend that you create a directory now called C:\TEMP if it does not yet exist.

To download either the 32-bit Windows 95 version or the 16-bit version for Windows 3.x, you will need to click here to access Pegasus Mail Europe & DOWNLOAD which is the Official Pegasus Distribution Site. Follow the links to Pegasus Mail distribution (downloading). Look for W32-255.EXE for Windows 95 systems and WINPM255.EXE for Windows 3.x systems.

Installation Instructions

The 16 bit version will run fine under Windows 95 but we recommend you use the 32 bit version for tighter integration under Win 95 and Windows NT. This version will also retain long (Win95) filenames for any attached files sent to you.

Before you start, you need to know three configurations:
  - your e-mail address: (eg. joesoap@iafrica.com)
  - the address of your POP server: (eg: dbnpop01.iafrica.com)
  - the address of your SMTP server: (eg: smtp.mweb.co.za)

If you don't know these setting you can look inside the Options Setup section of your browser (assuming it's mail enabled) and the details should be easily found under Mail Server Configurations. The original documentation sent to you by your ISP will also contain these details.

It is often the case that the POP (Post Office Protocol server for incoming mail) server and the SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol server for outgoing mail) server are one and the same. LIA (Netpune Software) for example uses dbn.lia.net for both protocols.

Once downloaded, you need to follow these steps .......

  1. Copy the W32-255.EXE file from your file download directory (C:\DOWNLOAD on many systems) to the C:\TEMP directory (or whichever directory you use to extract and install software from).
  2. Use the Run command from the Windows 95 Start Menu to execute the W32-255.EXE file.
  3. The file will automatically unzip and then present you with a number of questions, the first of which is a simple "where do you want the software installed?". It is convention to accept the default C:\PMAIL.
  4. Install for a "Single User Only" unless two or more people with different e-mail accounts want to access from this same machine.
  5. Do not install support for Netware.
And it really is as simple as that. On your first access the system will attempt to locate a WINSOCK.DLL file and ask if it should be loaded on demand. Generally accept this offer.

Further Tuition

Pegasus Mail is surprisingly simple to use - all you have to do is hit the World icon with the two arrows and your mail is delivered and collected. But if you feel you need more help, then there's lots available.

Under the Pegasus Help menuline option you will find a good tutorial. You should look through this first.

Then we strongly recommend you try Webpro's own Pegasus Tutorial for an introduction with a different perspective and coverage of a number of issues that are not covered elsewhere.
